What happens when building-science engineering is applied to theatrical set design?
Global daylighting manufacturer Kingspan Light and Air recently pursued a revolutionary project with New Village Arts, helping design a first-of-its-kind synthetic apiary for the new sci-fi play The Apiary, currently running in Carlsbad, Calif.
Applying extensive expertise from designing building-envelope materials, Kingspan Light and Air engineered a synthetic apiary set piece, composed of six Kingspan translucent wall panels. The structure serves as a key set piece on stage throughout the show.
In an innovative intersection of science and arts, the highly engineered and translucent apiary mirrors the show’s central themes of innovation, preservation and humanity’s efforts to engineer solutions. Kingspan Light and Air also designed the apiary so the panels can be reassembled with endless versatility for future projects, advancing sustainability in theater design.
Evolving Kingspan Light and Air’s manufacturing focus from solely building design to now stage design, this project introduces bold new possibilities throughout the performing arts industry to utilize Kingspan Light and Air assemblies for set design and beyond.
