YOUTH HOME IN DOWNTOWN GRAND RAPIDS

Wolverine Building Group is excited to announce that they are partnering with Covenant House Michigan – Grand Rapids to build a homeless, runaway, and at-risk youth (18-24 years old) home in downtown Grand Rapids at 50 Antoine St., SW. The new youth home will be constructed adjacent to Covenant House Academy, a high school for at-risk students.  The nonprofit organization is part of Covenant House International (CHI), the largest federation of youth sheltering programs in North America. CHI’s mission is to restore young citizens back to a stable living situation and steady employment.
Groundbreaking of the new facility is slated for later this year.
Wolverine Building Group will be building Covenant House Michigan – Grand Rapids, as a 15,470 sq. ft., three story, 28-30 bed state-of-the-art facility with design and engineering provided by Progressive AE. The first floor is primarily for student intake and assessment, including a large multi-purpose room. The rest of the first floor is comprised of administrative offices that support Covenant House Michigan – Grand Rapids. Floors two and three are identical residential floors with the exception that floor two will house women and floor three will house men. Each floor has 14 individual sleeping rooms with congregate bathrooms within the assigned sleeping areas. Additionally, each resident floor will have a small café area along with spaces for socializing and laundry facilities. The exterior of the building is a combination of masonry, metal panel, wood, punched window openings, and select storefront areas.
In addition to a homeless shelter, Covenant House Michigan – Grand Rapids will offer street outreach programs, health services, educational and vocational programs, job readiness and placement as well as other support services, to help overcome hurdles that contribute to homelessness such as unemployment, inadequate education, violence, sex trafficking, drugs, and incarceration.
“Wolverine has been giving back to the community for 78 years. Our employees volunteer their skills, expertise, and wisdom to organizations such as Urban League, Habitat for Humanity, Boys & Girls Scouts, Camp Rogers, Camp Manitou-lin, Faith House, Mel Trotter, and more. They also serve their time on Boards and become mentors for children and teens in need. Our employees care about the work they do, but most importantly, they care about how their work is going to help change lives. This is why our partnership with CHMGR is a perfect match,” said Aaron Jonker, President of Wolverine Building Group.
