Sandy Springs, Ga., is the No. 25 growth city in America, according to the U-Haul® Growth Index analyzing customer moves during 2022.
People arriving in Sandy Springs in one-way U-Haul trucks decreased almost 20% from 2021, but departures fell 30%. Due to fewer people leaving the area, do-it-yourself movers arriving in Sandy Springs accounted for 51.8% of all one-way U-Haul truck traffic in and out of the market (48.2% departures).
A 16-mile drive north of Atlanta, Sandy Springs is one of two Georgia markets (Athens) on the top 25 growth cities list.
“Sandy Springs is an affluent community – a very nice city – located really close to Atlanta,” stated Doug Weston, U-Haul Company of Atlanta North president. “I think people are selling their expensive homes on the West Coast and moving into the nice, upscale suburbs of Atlanta. Sandy Springs is also near the technology corridor, so that’s a part of the growth and attraction as well. People can work in the technology sector and afford a really nice home for their families.”
The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled according to the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks arriving in a city or state, versus departing from that city or state, in a calendar year. Migration trends data is compiled from more than 2 million one-way U-Haul truck transactions that occur annually across the U.S. and Canada.
Neighboring cities in U-Haul markets are often packaged together for migration trends purposes.
While U-Haul migration trends do not correlate directly to population or economic growth, the U-Haul Growth Index is an effective gauge of how well cities and states are attracting and maintaining residents.
