Driving a truck on the road daily can be a stressful and difficult thing. Unlike cars, there are so many other things that you have to worry about and be aware of. The moment you relax and stop paying attention is the moment disaster can strike. There are a few things that you should know however as a truck driver that can help you stay safe and allow you to make smart decisions. Here are some of the most useful things you should know if you are a truck driver.

What to Do in an Accident

While all automotive accidents typically follow the same format, truck accidents do have a bit more technicality to them that you have to be aware of. The first major reason is that trucks cause a lot more damage if they are involved in an accident. Generally speaking, if a car was involved in the accident they are suffering serious injuries. If you find yourself in an accident, the first thing you need to do is start documenting everything that happened at the scene.
This will be useful for both the police and the attorney that you choose to represent you. No matter where you are, you can find an attorney, from Houston to New York City, and a truck accident attorney in Houston strongly recommends getting expert experience as there can be a lot of compensation and money involved in these cases. Especially if you were determined to not be at fault for the accident. While all this is happening, you should be taking the time to rest and recover and also ensure that you are getting the medical attention that you need for your injuries. Knowing what to do in the event of an accident as a trucker is an important knowledge.

Emergency Weather Gear

As a trucker, you are going to be driving at all hours of the night and sometimes in severe weather. Not only that, but you might find yourself on roads that are very far away from cities. Because of this, you have to be prepared for any disaster that might strike and be able to react accordingly. Breakdowns do occur on the road, especially if the road conditions are not the best. If the weather is extremely cold or stormy, you have to be able to hunker down for a few hours while you wait for help to arrive. Having emergency blankets, raingear, electronics, and even some water and food provisions will help to pass the time.
Having a phone charger as well will make sure that you always have contact with someone. All of this will help to ensure that if your truck runs into a problem, you will be okay as you wait for help to arrive.

Don’t Forget the Chains

If you are driving up north, there is a high likelihood that at some point you are going to be encountering ice or snow. While this can cause slight issues for cars, it can cause major issues for a truck driver. As you are going to be hauling a ton of weight, any drifting or loss of control can result in your whole truck flipping on its side. A way to combat this is to install chains around the wheels. These will help to provide an extra layer of traction and will allow you to combat even the most inclimate of roads. That being said, chains are not a get-out-of-jail-free card and you still have to drive based on the conditions. Having that next level of traction provided by chains is a great way to drive safely in the winter months.

Be Aware of Your Weight, Length, and Height

Finally, you always have to be aware of the size of your truck. When it comes to height, you have to make sure that the bridges you are going to be driving under have proper clearance to allow you to go under them. In regards to length, you have to be aware of this especially when it comes to the right hand and left-hand turns. Oftentimes you are going to swing out very wide. This can pose a massive problem if you aren’t expecting it. Finally, the weight of your truck will determine how far you can turn. A heavier truck has a much greater chance of tipping over should you attempt to make a sharp turn. Understanding how your truck drives are important for any truck driver.
These are all tips that you should follow when it comes to driving a truck on the road. Always be aware of your surroundings and give yourself enough time to brake and enough space to turn. Take the time to master all of these and become a better truck driver. Where do you plan on taking your truck next?
