Project Team Tops Off Marriott’s 1st Portland Moxy Hotel

Project Team Tops Off Marriott’s 1st Portland Moxy Hotel

Portland is one step closer to opening its first Moxy hotel, the experiential hotel brand from Marriott International. Representatives from DLR Group, Graves Hospitality, Howard S. Wright Construction, Marriott International, and Urban Resources celebrated the topping off of the new hotel on March 5, 2020. Moxy Portland combines dynamic design, approachable service, and affordable pricing for the adventure-seeking, next-Gen traveler.

The highly anticipated, 197-room hotel, located on the edge of the Pearl District in the west end of Portland, is expected to open in February 2021. Design highlights of the 12-story property include geometric patterns configured through an abstract of rainfall, and a color palette that reflects the local Columbia River Basin basalt stone, which doubles as an artistic foil to the surrounding blond masonry and white terracotta buildings. The building engages the public and enlivens the site with large, operable glass walls that connect the interior activity to the urban streetscape. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls at the end of each corridor frame the long view to Mount Hood, to draw visitors out onto the pedestrian-friendly blocks of downtown Portland.

“Portland is a vibrant city that needed a hotel destination that not only reflects its cultural liveliness, but supports it,” said DLR Group Principal Stephen Cavanaugh, AIA, LEED AP. “DLR Group’s design prioritizes transparency and a strong connection to the outdoors. By embracing the surrounding community, Moxy Portland becomes a catalyst for guests craving an authentic local experience.”

This focus on transparency extends into the hotel’s beverage & food (B&F) experience with the inclusion of a street-level dining area branded, Food Cart Alley, which is expertly positioned to complement the lively lobby bar. Located within a neighborhood long cherished for its food trucks, Food Cart Alley is designed to incorporate local purveyors into the heart of the hotel, allowing guests convenient access while simultaneously opening up to Alder Street for a seamless connection to traditional customers. This engaging space is designated clearly with both exterior and lobby signage while a continuous canopy at street level protects pedestrians from Portland’s frequent rain. Vendors will be selected on a rotating basis and each of the final selections will be varied and unique to ensure viability and enhance guest experience. Local vendors interested in learning more about becoming a part of Food Cart Alley, should visit foodcartalley.com.

“We understand the vital role of food trucks in shaping local identity,” said Benjamin Graves, president and CEO of Graves Hospitality. “By integrating at least three or four food cart vendors into the Food Cart Alley of Moxy’s lobby, we are committed to preserving and showcasing this dynamic facet of Portland’s distinct culture.”

Moxy Portland is developed, owned, and operated by Graves Hospitality in partnership with KCB Real Estate. DLR Group is providing architecture and interior design services, and Howard S. Wright Construction and Urban Resources, Inc. are collaborating on construction of the hotel.
