Visitors to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, are welcomed with a dynamic LCD video dome in the resort’s porte cochère main entrance to South Florida’s premier gaming, entertainment and dining destination.
Weighing 6,000 pounds and spanning 24 feet, the custom video dome is constructed with steel and Makrolon® Lumen XT LC5 polycarbonate sheet from Covestro LLC. Makrolon® Lumen XT LC5 polycarbonate sheet allows the video dome to broadcast artistic images, change colors, show video and convey useful information for guests.
The translucent Makrolon® Lumen XT LC5 polycarbonate sheet acts as a diffuser for the 16,000 LEDs that light the dome. Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheets offer high light diffusion, uniform light transmission and optical clarity. Thanks to state-of-the-art forward scattering technology, Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheets offer high luminance uniformity and high light output at the same time.
The video dome was designed by David Mexico at David Mexico Design Group and fabricated by custom lighting manufacturer Lumid. “Covestro worked closely with Lumid, providing technical support and assisting with material selection for the video dome,” said Ken Licklider, sign and lighting segment manager, Polycarbonate Sheet, Covestro LLC. “Makrolon® Lumen XT LC5 offers the ideal properties to support Lumid in bringing David Mexico’s unique vision to life.”
When compared with other light diffusing products such as glass and acrylic, Makrolon® Lumen XT LC5 polycarbonate sheet has superior impact strength – an important attribute for this application. It was tested to withstand category 2 hurricane winds, which can reach up to 110 miles per hour. Makrolon® Lumen XT also offers higher flammability resistance and superior temperature resistance compared with acrylic.
According to Dominique Alary, president and founder, Lumid, “Covestro’s material stood out from the competition due to its excellent high diffusing properties that deliver video images with clear definition. We were also able to use a thinner material due to the impact strength of the polycarbonate sheet.”
The end result is a dazzling display that draws visitors to the hotel and casino.
Makrolon® Lumen XT sheet is available in a range of diffusion levels as well as a warm or cool hue to offer designers flexibility to maximize aesthetics and performance. The translucent sheet features a textured surface on one side that eliminates hot spots and shadowing. Additionally, Makrolon® Lumen XT can be cold formed in various shapes for design and functionality without sacrificing high-diffusion performance.
Attendees at Strategies in Light, March 1-3 in Santa Clara, California, can visit Covestro’s booth (#607) for more details about Covestro’s material solutions for LED applications.
