Authors Keith Davis, of KRD Design, and Mark Jenkinson, an independent creative consultant, have compiled On-Premise Signage: Situations, Legibility & Visibility Guidelines for Traffic Safety, the latest publication from the Sign Research Foundation.

SRF’s newest report breaks down the science behind sign visibility and offers a calculation tool that can be used to test design concepts. The research is divided into three sections geared toward three unique audiences – planners, designers, and sign owners. It breaks down:

  • How sign size impacts visibility and readability so planners can understand driver situations and factor in viewer reaction times.
  • Principles for sign placement for optimal legibility so sign owners can learn more about the cone of vision and sign blocking.
  • Design considerations for sign conspicuity to better understand sign legibility factors like color contrasts, type legibility and sign area calculation.

The manual also includes calculation tools, with tables that walk through an entire calculation project.

This work joins a growing body of SRF research that guides communities, designers and planners in sign codes, wayfinding, traffic safety and other topics related to world-class signage systems.

Most SRF research, including this manual, is available for $29.95.
