ST. LOUIS – Margaret McDonald, LEED AP, has joined HOK as director of interiors in St. Louis. She brings 15 years of experience designing projects for leading St. Louis companies and institutions including Ameren, Edward Jones, Wells Fargo Advisors, Boeing Co., the St. Louis Cardinals, Washington University in St. Louis, Energizer Holdings, Express Scripts and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Her recent high-profile interior design projects include the Chess Club and Scholastic Center and The Laclede Group’s new headquarters in the renovated 700 Market building in downtown St. Louis.
McDonald began her career at HOK in 1997. She rejoins the firm from Arcturis, where she served as principal and design director for the past 15 years.

McDonald succeeds Michael Nolan, senior vice president, who has relocated from St. Louis to assume a new role as director of interiors in HOK’s Chicago office while continuing to help guide the firm-wide interiors practice. Under Michael Nolan’s leadership, HOK’s St. Louis interiors practice has tripled its revenue since 2009. In its 2015 Top 100 Giants feature, Interior Design magazine ranked HOK as the second-largest US-based interior design firm and among the most-admired firms.
McDonald earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Interior Architecture from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Art History from the University of Colorado Boulder. She serves on the board of directors for Laumeier Sculpture Park, the Saint Louis Fashion Fund, Perennial, and the Downtown STL Community Improvement District. She also serves on the University of Missouri–St. Louis College of Fine Arts and Communication Dean’s Advisory Board and the Women’s Leadership Society for United Way.
Current and recent projects for HOK’s St. Louis office include the 16-block BJC HealthCare Washington University Medical Center Campus Renewal Project; participating on the team designing updates to the landmark 700 Market building, which is being developed by The Koman Group, LLC, as the new headquarters for The Laclede Group; design of a new Patient Care Center for the Colleges of Optometry and Nursing at the University of Missouri-St. Louis; design of @4240 in the Cortex Innovation Community (HOK also created the Cortex master plan and designed Cortex One); the Saint Louis Art Museum renovation and expansion; and design of regional offices for Parsons Brinckerhoff in more than 25 US cities.
