Local Construction Company Celebrates 95 Years

The company that built the McNay Art Museum, UT Health Science Center, and raised the roof at Hemisfair Park Arena invites San Antonio to join them for free from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on December 6th as they commemorate almost a century of shaping the city’s homes, businesses, and landmarks. G.W. Mitchell Construction is celebrating its 95th year as local family-owned construction business with a walk down memory lane.
Now in its fourth generation of family ownership, the company is hosting a holiday anniversary celebration to look back at their role in San Antonio’s growth. Guests will enjoy drinks and hors d’eouvres while learning the history behind some of G.W. Mitchell’s most memorable projects on easel-mounted displays. The event will be hosted at the Quarry Golf Club on 444 E Basse Road.
It is a true blessing to run a 95 year old, 4th generation family owned company. I get to work with the finest construction professionals in San Antonio,” said CEO, Bill Mitchell. It’s been an honor to build some of San Antonio’s most recognized establishments.”
Founded in 1921 by World War I veteran George Mitchell, G. W. Mitchell has thrived under continuous family ownership through the decades. The company started out in residential projects and built homes for several notable San Antonio families that would later become local landmarks, such as the McNay Art Museum and La Fonda on Main. Later taking on more commercial projects, G. W. Mitchell has worked on iconic landmarks including La Villita Assembly Building, Fox Tech High School, and even renovations on the Alamo. With deep roots in local culture and a dedication to excellence, the Mitchell family, and their staff look forward to many more years to come in serving the San Antonio community.
