For a historic Princeton, New Jersey neighborhood, a long-awaited mixed-income apartment project promises to revitalize the area the transformation of a former Masonic lodge into a sustainably designed 10-unit multifamily residence.
The innovative project led by Joshua Zinder Architecture + Design (JZA+D) will adapt the underutilized Aaron Lodge #9 Masonic Temple at 30 MacLean Street, bringing new vibrancy and activity while retaining the essential character of the neighborhood, recently designated a local historic district. The project for owner group Princeton Maclean LLC will also seek Gold-level certification under the LEED for Existing Buildings standard from the U.S. Green Building Council.
According to JZA+D founding principal Joshua Zinder, AIA, “The Masonic Lodge at 30 Maclean Street is a beloved local icon. We take pride in preserving it and giving it a second life for residents, neighbors and future generations to enjoy.โ
The design will restore the exterior of the building, maintaining and preserving its original character, height and scale, while adding a new stair tower structure to one side. Green building components include energy-efficient mechanical systems and fixtures as well as bike parking, new trees and plantings. Eight of the units will be available at market rates, with the remaining two earmarked for affordable housing.
The revived 30 Maclean Street is projected to be complete and available to occupy by Fall of 2019. The project team includes ML7 Construction & Design of Princeton, NJ, as general contractor, and project management by J3 Management of Kingston, NJ, with financing from Berkshire Bank.
