The National Institute of Standards and Technology is pressing forward with implementation of “the Joplin recommendations’’ as its highest priority, according to sources. NIST’s study of the Joplin tornado — the most comprehensive study of a tornado ever undertaken — could lead to new standards for building design and construction, public shelters and emergency communications that can reduce deaths and property damage losses caused by tornadoes.
