Winter weather poses a big threat to the integrity of your driveway’s pavement – most people don’t realize that their driveway needs a bit more protection from winter weather than salt alone can manage.
Just a simple crack in the driveway can lead to major issues down the line if steps are not taken to protect driveway pavement from harsh winter weather.
The Driveway Company offers do’s and don’ts for protecting driveway pavement during the winter. Their tips include, but are not limited to:
- DO: Sealcoat driveway before it’s too late. Sealcoating your driveway helps to ensure any cracks or voids in the pavement are filled before ice and water get into the cracks – which can cause buckling and shifting.
- DO: Shovel pavement regularly. It’s easy to skip this if you aren’t planning on leaving your home during winter storms. However, even if you don’t plan on driving, shoveling snow can prevent freeze-thaw cycles from damaging your driveway.
- DON’T: Use damaging tools on pavement. Asphalt driveways can be easily damaged by sharp objects, such as a metal shovel blade. Instead, opt for a plastic shovel.
- DON’T: Use corrosive materials on pavement. Salt and de-icing materials seem like a quick fix for the stubborn ice that shoveling can’t remove. However, these materials are corrosive and break down your driveway. Instead, opt for a de-icing material with calcium chloride.
