GTM Architects partnered with Yakabod—a leader in secure software development—in designing the company’s headquarters in the Union Knitting Mills building in downtown Frederick, MD, which GTM recently renovated. GTM worked closely with Yakabod’s CEO to create a space that embraced the historic character of the building while adding modern elements and in providing expansion areas to support the company as they continue to grow.
Located between downtown’s bustling East Patrick Street and Carroll Creek Promenade, the 40’ x 210’ tenant-area created several programmatic and adjacency challenges, leading GTM to efficiently organize the office into two halves. The open-floor computer stations are located in the 4,000 sq. ft. “glass box” half of the space, reinforcing a feeling of openness, light and flexibility, while the offices, conference rooms and lounges are organized within the original masonry-punched window-half of the building.
As self-proclaimed “Foodies”, Yakabod also required a large kitchenette with commercial kitchen appliances, a professional coffee bar housed around the original freight elevator structure and locations for food stations during company events. The remainder of the space includes two large conference rooms with a folding partition to accommodate larger meetings or events, offices and three smaller “break-out” lounge spaces.
Ultimately, GTM delivered a comfortable and efficient interior that fosters a fun work environment for Yakabod’s current staff and to attract top-notch new talent.
