It sounds more like a plot from a science fiction film than real life: according to recent projections, there will be three times as many internet-connected things on Earth as there are people within the next 10 years. Consumers are already reaping the benefits of this transition, adjusting the air conditioning in their home from the office or altering the heat to save on costs while vacationing. These opportunities, which once seemed abstract and consumer-centric, have now become a reality to the over five million commercial and industrial buildings in the US[1].
Enabling an industry that consumes over 202 billion in annual energy costs to reduce its carbon footprint
For the first time in commercial HVAC equipment, the world’s largest global air conditioning company, Daikin Applied, is harnessing the Internet of Things (IoT) with the launch of its new technology platform, Intelligent Equipment™. Unlocking data previously hidden, Intelligent Equipment will enable an industry that consumes over 202.3[2] billion in annual energy costs combined, to move beyond a reactive business to a proactive model, improving overall operations and processes, increasing cost savings and reducing its carbon footprint.
Making buildings more responsive to users’ needs by unlocking hidden data and shifting behaviors in real time “The Internet of Things is impacting all levels of how we conduct business at the equipment and controls level,” said Paul Rauker, vice president of systems and controls at Daikin Applied. “We’re able to uncover data and use that information in ways never possible before now. We’re able to receive actionable, real-time data and see shifts in behavior instantly, without expending additional effort. This means, cities will be able to reduce their carbon emissions, significantly, while making buildings more responsive to the needs of users and occupants.”

Shining a spotlight on inefficient systems and business models for course correction
Currently, 30 percent of energy in commercial and industrial buildings is used inefficiently or unnecessarily[3]. With Daikin Intelligent Equipment, HVAC systems can be monitored and controlled remotely from any mobile device.  It allows for quick adjustments to correct ineffective systems. Specifically, Intelligent Equipment makes it possible for HVAC systems to deliver financial summaries of energy savings; sync with weather forecasts, intuitively adjusting for occupant comfort and energy efficiency, and give users direct access to its power usage levels as well as its CO2 use, providing a more accurate view of their carbon footprint. It also enables companies to make better business decisions by examining current practices and making modifications in their business models to create efficiencies.
Powered by Intel®
Daikin Intelligent Equipment is powered by an Intel® IoT Gateway along with Intel® Decision Solutions: Trend Analytics Module that offers users the confidence of predictive maintenance. The solution also includes a Wind River® IoT platform based on its Linux operating system and overall security is provided by Intel® McAfee.
Daikin Applied plans to incorporate the Intelligent Equipment platform across its entire product line beginning with outdoor air handlers – known in the HVAC industry as packaged rooftop systems – specifically Daikin Rebel™ and Daikin Maverick™ II. The technology, Rauker says, easily interfaces with new or legacy equipment and enhances energy efficiencies of the units. Rebel is already one of the most energy efficient rooftop units on the market and is the first to meet the Department of Energy’s Rooftop Unit Challenge; saving commercial building owners up to 60-70 percent on HVAC energy costs over traditional rooftop units.
