The Design-Build Institute of America is proud to announce its 2020 Design-Build Project/Team Award Winners, including two projects in the Atlanta area. Michelin Tower at Road Atlanta and the HUB at Peachtree Center have each received National Design-Build Merit Awards. These projects will also go on to compete for a National Award of Excellence and Project of the Year to be announced at DBIA’s Design-Build Conference & Expo Awards Ceremony, October 29th.
Michelin Tower at Road Atlanta
National Design-Build Award of Merit
Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta was overdue for an upgraded media tower, as well as needing improvements to enhance driver and spectator safety. With only 6 months in design prior to starting construction, the project had to be completed in time for the largest event the track hosts–the Petit Le Mans. The program included: demolition of an existing facility and construction of a 4-story tower with Executive Suites, Race Operations, Media, Rooftop Viewing, and a separate Medical Facility to house emergency response teams, a triage facility, and ambulance resources. The new state-of-the-art tower was constructed next to an active pit road and pedestrian bridge. With such a tight schedule and constantly changing program, the project could not have been successfully completed without utilizing the design-build delivery method.
The HUB at Peachtree Center
National Design-Build Award of Merit
The HUB at Peachtree Center is a three-story underground retail center and outdoor courtyard within the Peachtree Center, a mixed-use development in the heart of Atlanta’s downtown business district. This renovation returns a multi-functional plaza back to the Atlanta public to gather and socialize in, and brings new life to the underground mall, which will don the new name of The Hub. Design principles of daylighting, public art, and “green” elements were integrated into an accessible, cohesively designed retail environment that provides a comfortable respite from the busy downtown streets. Ultimately, the project resulted in the revitalization of a downtown Atlanta landmark that, while once at the center of the urban environment, had long since been forgotten and replaced by new public areas.
As the use of design-build continues to grow across all sectors, so has the number of impressive project success stories. This year’s award winners lead the industry by delivering some of the most extraordinary design-build projects in the nation.
“ From rapid response COVID-19 medical units to delivering essential infrastructure that strengthens our nation, design-build continues to play a vital role in building our communities.
