How to Prepare Your Work Site for the Winter

Winter Site 1 112120

Every season of the year has its positives and negatives, and this is why it’s important to note the traits of winter. When you run a business, you certainly have to keep in consideration the weather conditions, even though it may initially seem like a non-factor. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. The harsh winter weather can cause great discomfort, but some activities in life are inevitable. For instance, work in the construction industry where most tasks are performed outside goes on regardless. The good news is that there are certain measures you can consider to improve the working environment. Read on to learn how to prepare your worksite for the winter.

Workplace Preparation

First and foremost, you must prepare the workplace to accommodate the winter work demands and the workers. If the workstation is poorly prepared, the employees will face huge risks of falls and injuries. You must prioritize the clearing of walkways, roads, and workspaces. Snow is slippery, so ensure to minimize tripping hazards and falls. All electric cables and cords that cross walkways must be properly covered with flat mats.
Ensure that the floors are dry and mop any spills since they will contribute to the slip risks. The workers moving in and out of the building can bring in snow, so monitor the floors continuously. Additionally, you must ensure that the surfaces inside and outside have good drainage to enhance the smooth flow of water. The worksite should also have adequate lighting to help the workers perform their duties safely.

Get The Correct Personal Protective Equipment

To prepare for winter, you must get the correct protective clothing, such as gloves, that protect the workers against elements like frostbite. We use our hands to perform various tasks, hence the need to get warm gloves for your workers to prevent blisters. When buying winter gloves, it is essential to consider different factors, such as material, waterproofing, weight, grip, price, and size, among others. You must also consider these gloves’ compatibility with different equipment, such as touch screens and other machinery. These gloves go hand in hand with winter jackets designed to keep the employees warm when the weather is freezing.
Do not forget to get appropriate suits and boots that are designed for extreme temperatures. You must also ensure that the protective clothing  you get for your workers is breathable to avoid heavy sweating. Ultimately, it is advisable to educate your employees about how to use PPE when executing their duties.

Encourage The Right Diet

When working in cold temperatures, your body will demand more energy to maintain normal body temperature. The PPE’s added weight also means that you will be exerting more energy than usual when working in good weather conditions. Additionally, the rate of metabolism increases in cold temperatures to help the body generate more energy to keep it warm. Therefore, you must ensure that the workers eat healthy, balanced meals to generate sufficient energy for optimum performance. Warm beverages are also ideal for keeping the body warm and hydrated. However, alcohol must never be allowed in the workplace at any cost.

Set Realistic Worker expectations

The workers must understand that the added weight from PPE can have a significant toll on their performance. Therefore, the employees can expect to work at a slower pace to ensure safety. Furthermore, during winter months, daylight hours are shorter; this can affect the working schedules. The team members within a specific worksite must be prepared for any eventuality that can be caused by bad weather.

Equipment And Vehicle Safety

Employees must be educated on how to take care of vehicles and equipment during the winter months. Driver safety is crucial, and things like batteries, wipers, tire pressure, and brakes must be maintained in good working condition. Emergency kits like ice scrapers, shovels, blankets, and torches should also be readily available in case of any eventuality.
Weather vagaries like frost and snow during winter can cause severe discomfort mainly to people who work in outdoor environments, so ensure that the site is clear of snow that will affect productivity. However, downtime resulting from the weather is not an option since no one can control it. The most viable option is to prepare your work site for the freezing winter temperatures. You must get the right protective clothing for your workers so that they can work comfortably in the outdoor environment. Additionally, consider other essential elements like promoting a healthy diet in the workplace. Winter comes with many challenges, so take your time to train the employees and implement proper safety measures.
