Skanska‘s work on George Mason University‘s Life Sciences and Engineering Building has earned the company a 2026 Excellence in Construction Award from the Metro Washington and Virginia Chapters of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC).
The $85.4 million project, located on the university’s Science and Technology (SciTech) Campus in Prince William County, Virginia, brings together advanced research laboratories, specialized teaching spaces and flexible innovation areas designed to support emerging fields such as bioengineering, bioinformatics and computational life sciences.
Completed in January 2025, the 132,000-square-foot facility provides students and faculty with new opportunities for research, collaboration and hands-on learning while supporting the university’s continued growth.
“The Life Sciences and Engineering Building helps advance meaningful research and serves as a hub for George Mason students, so it is especially rewarding to see it recognized for its construction excellence,” says Mark Balling, EVP and GM responsible for Skanska’s Mid-Atlantic region. “This achievement highlights our continued commitment to delivering exceptional facilities and community-focused development to support higher education institutions.”
Presented annually, ABC’s Excellence in Construction Awards recognize outstanding projects completed by member companies throughout the Washington metropolitan area. The program highlights construction quality, craftsmanship and the teams responsible for bringing complex projects to completion.
The award also underscores the growing role of George Mason’s SciTech Campus as a center for research and education in Virginia’s technology corridor. The campus serves students, faculty and communities throughout Prince William, Fauquier and western Fairfax counties as well as Manassas and Manassas Park.
Skanska USA Building, which operates from its regional headquarters in Durham, North Carolina, currently has more than $1 billion in projects underway across its Mid-Atlantic region.
