Darden Restaurants will sell its struggling Red Lobster chain to private equity firm Golden Gate Capital for $2.1 billion in cash, according to The Wall Street Journal. The deal comes over the objections of activist shareholders Starboard Value and Barington Capital Group, which have been pushing for Darden to spin off its specialty restaurant concepts into a separate company. Darden’s board unanimously approved the offer from Golden Gate, which is expected to close later this year.
