Washington, D.C., suburbs in Virginia and Maryland are attracting more retailers, with many taking large leases because of the greater availability of space and lower rents, according to CoStar. Roughly 1.44 million square feet of retail space are under construction in the suburbs of the District, compared with the 372,680 square feet under construction in the city.
