Air Pollution Control Equipment Tackles U.S. Problem

Air Pollution 072120

Between 2017 and 2018,  air pollution increased significantly in the USA, according to research conducted at Carnegie Mellon University. The Clean Air Act gives the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the authorization to protect the public’s health by regulation of the emissions of potentially dangerous pollutants. The effects of air pollution on both the environment and human life are devastating, with more than 10,000 additional related deaths being recorded in 2018. Manufacturing and processing concerns are, unfortunately, the biggest contributors to air pollution, not only in the USA, but globally as well. Thankfully, these industries can employ several approaches to help reduce their toxic emissions. There are various pieces of air pollution control equipment that can be utilized to  address the pollution concerns in the country.

Oxidizers can effectively break up pollutants

Oxidizers are fairly common air purifying systems that are capable of breaking up pollutants and transforming them into non-toxic carbon.  Two common types of oxidizers exist. Catalytic oxidizers make use of high heat or a range of elemental additives to burn the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Thermal oxidizers, on the other hand, use a combustion process in order to change particulate matter and other  pollutants, including odorous fumes, hydrocarbon compounds and VOCs into waste heat, water vapor and carbon dioxide. Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTOs) are the most widely-used type of pollution reduction technology. Through high-temperature thermal oxidation that utilizes residence time, oxygen, turbulence and temperature, pollutants are converted into water vapor as well as carbon dioxide. While oxidizers are highly effective, technical services provider  Polsys note that they do require regular maintenance in order to operate at maximum capacity. Regular maintenance will keep a vital oxidizer in optimum condition and thus allow it to perform at its most effective.

Scrubbers are effective at controlling gaseous emissions

Like oxidizers, scrubbers are also commonly used in manufacturing and processing plants to control air pollution. Scrubbers remove particulates and gases from industrial discharges before they are released into the atmosphere. Two types of scrubbers are used to achieve this. Dry scrubbers inject a dry, neutralizing agent into the emission flow, where it neutralizes the pollutants. Once the chemical reaction is completed, a set of filters inside the chamber of the scrubbers collects and disperses the redundant agents.  Wet scrubbers make use of liquids, such as water, to collect and remove gas and particulate pollutants that are water-soluble. Wet scrubbing can take place in one of two ways. Either the scrubbing process directs a stream of gas through the liquid solution, or the liquid is injected directly into the gas stream.

Electrostatic precipitators can remove dust and smoke with ease

Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) are effective filtration devices that effectively remove very fine particulates such as smoke and dust from industrial emissions. This is achieved by making use of transformers that generate an elevated static electrical potential variance between the collecting plates of the ESP and the charging electrodes. As the stream of polluted gas passes between the plate and the electrodes, the charge draws the particles to the collection plates. The collected particle matter is regularly removed from the collection plates and dumped into a dedicated collection hopper. Although not as widely used as oxidizers and scrubbers, ESPs are considered  very effective at controlling air pollution and enjoy an efficiency rate of more than 90%.

Air pollution is threatening the collective well-being of both the environment and us as humans. By installing a range of equipment that can help control pollution, manufacturing and processing concerns can reduce their potentially-toxic emissions considerably.
