New Vs Used Trucks for Sale – Which Is Better

New Vs Used Trucks for Sale – Which Is Better

Some operators need a ready-to-go tipper by Friday because they’ve got a harvest job or site contract coming up. Others can afford to wait for a slot to book into the build queue of a new prime mover that’s months away. Both are in the market for another truck, but the decision gets much clearer when you factor in the time constraints.

It isn’t just a matter of cost today. It’s about whether you’ll be able to use it from day one of peak season or if you’re going to lose out on revenue due to a delay in getting it on the road.

Availability, Timing and Downtime

A used truck that has been checked out, is compliant and has the right body on it can be picked up fairly quickly. Platforms such as austruckmarket.com.au can help buyers find suitable used trucks based on their requirements, which could mean the difference between a truck being ready for a job next week and paying for a hire truck while you’re waiting.

New trucks can be ordered to order, but lead times will depend on production allocation, body build and availability of accessories. A new cab chassis isn’t necessarily job-ready on arrival; you’ll still need a tray, tipper body, hydraulic installation, guards and towbar.

Don’t accept an estimated date. Get a date in writing.

A new truck will usually have better warranty coverage and a defined start to its service history. If you’re going to be running the truck hard during peak season, that certainty might make sense of a higher purchase price and a structured finance agreement.

A used truck can also be a good option if it has full-service records and major worn parts have recently been replaced. Look at the condition of the tyres, brakes, suspension, driveline and last service date instead of how it looks.

Not worth bothering about if the truck is only going to be used for some local runs and can be put away while it’s repaired.

What Should You Inspect Before Buying?

Get the truck ready for the work it needs to do from day one. A tipper may need a certain payload, a tarpaulin or a hydraulic setup. A prime mover will need the right hitch arrangement and the capacity to handle the planned trailer.

Check the height of the truck once it has the body, beacon and any other equipment fitted. Make sure it will clear the lowest depot gate, shed or worksite access point before buying. Also check registration, inspection requirements, load rating and any relevant rules.

A used truck will typically require less money upfront, which leaves you more money to spend on fuel, insurance, repairs and wages. But a cheap truck that immediately needs some mechanical work can leave you worse off than buying a slightly more expensive truck that comes with a warranty.

Consider the following costs for the first year:

  • Purchase price and finance payments
  • Fit-out, registration and insurance
  • Estimated service and repair costs
  • Cost of a replacement vehicle if the truck is down

Planning Beyond Peak Season

A new truck might hold its value better if you keep it for a few years and maintain it properly. A used truck may be a better short-term solution if the workload is only temporary, but don’t expect too much when you come to sell it. Older trucks can take longer to sell and become harder to move if a big repair bill is looming.

Choose used when you have a suitable truck available now that is in good condition for the job you need to do. Choose new when you know the delivery date will suit your schedule, the specification is vital and you can benefit from warranty cover over a longer period.

Create a one-pager of the type of body, payload requirements, height, delivery date and maximum weekly repayment to compare available vehicles.
