How Hotels Can Choose Towels for Guest Comfort, Durability and Operational Efficiency

How Hotels Can Choose Towels for Guest Comfort, Durability and Operational Efficiency

Hotel towels influence far more than guest comfort. The right specifications can also support housekeeping efficiency, laundry performance, inventory consistency and long-term operating costs.

For hotels and resorts, towels may seem like a relatively small purchasing decision, but they are among the most frequently used textiles on a property. Guests interact with them every day, housekeeping teams handle them constantly, and laundry operations wash them repeatedly. The right towel program therefore needs to balance guest comfort with durability, laundering efficiency and consistent presentation.

Start With the Guest Experience

Softness is often the first characteristic guests notice. A towel should feel comfortable against the skin and communicate the level of quality expected from the property.

However, hospitality buyers should look beyond initial softness. Towels that feel impressive when new but quickly lose their texture or shape can create inconsistent guest experiences and increase replacement needs.

Cotton quality, construction, absorbency and finishing all contribute to how a towel performs over time. For hotels evaluating hotel and spa towels, the goal should be to find products that combine a comfortable hand feel with characteristics suitable for repeated commercial use.

Consider Weight and Intended Use

Towel weight is commonly expressed in GSM, or grams per square meter. Higher GSM towels generally provide a denser, more substantial feel, while lighter towels can dry faster and may reduce the burden on laundry operations.

There is no single ideal GSM for every hospitality environment. A luxury guest bathroom may call for a different towel than a pool area, fitness facility or high-turnover property.

Instead of selecting towels based only on weight, buyers should consider where each product will be used and how frequently it will be washed.

Think Beyond the Purchase Price

The lowest unit price does not necessarily result in the lowest operating cost.

Hospitality towels go through repeated washing, drying, folding, storage and guest use. If they need frequent replacement because of shrinkage, damaged edges, loss of absorbency or declining appearance, an inexpensive initial purchase can become costly over time.

Purchasing teams can benefit from evaluating expected service life alongside acquisition cost. A slightly higher upfront investment may be worthwhile when a towel maintains its appearance and performance through more laundry cycles.

Standardization Can Simplify Operations

Consistency can make towel management easier across guest rooms and operational areas.

Standardized sizes, colors and specifications help housekeeping teams maintain uniform room presentation while simplifying inventory management and reordering. Properties with multiple locations may gain additional benefits from using consistent specifications across their portfolio.

At the same time, different operational areas may require different products. Bath towels, hand towels, washcloths, pool towels and spa towels each serve distinct purposes.

Evaluate Customization Carefully

Embroidery, woven labels, custom colors and other branding elements can reinforce a property’s identity, particularly in resorts, spas and boutique hotels.

Customization should still support operational requirements. Decorative elements need to withstand commercial laundering, and specifications should remain practical for replacement orders as inventory changes.

Before committing to a large custom order, requesting samples can help purchasing teams evaluate texture, color, dimensions, branding and overall construction.

Build a Towel Program Around the Property

The strongest hospitality textile programs are not necessarily built around the heaviest or most expensive towel. They are built around the property’s positioning, guest expectations and daily operations.

By considering comfort, construction, laundering demands, standardization, replacement frequency and customization together, hotels can make purchasing decisions that support both the guest experience and long-term operational efficiency.
