Design Expert Shares the Spring Décor Rule for Every Home

The arrival of March means only one thing. Spring.

As natural light floods back into our homes, interior design expert Patrice Gerber, CEO of KOUBOO Artisan Decor & Furniture, is urging homeowners to stop overthinking spring and start with one golden rule: If it absorbs light, swap it.

Heavy throws, dark rugs, and dense cushion fabrics are built for winter. They soak up the very thing spring brings in abundance, which is natural light. Patrice says the fastest, most impactful refresh any home can make this season costs nothing more than a few thoughtful changes.

“Most people think a spring refresh means repainting walls or buying new furniture,” Patrice explains. “It doesn’t. It means understanding how light moves through your space and removing anything that fights it. One linen throw in place of a chunky knit can change the entire mood of a room instantly.”

Spring daylight is longer, lower-angled and more directional than summer sun, meaning textures and tones in a room become far more visible. Materials that look cozy in January can make a space feel flat and heavy by March. Patrice recommends a room-by-room audit using a single question: Does this piece reflect or absorb the light coming in right now?

Patrice identifies four areas where easy swaps deliver the highest visual impact:

Cushions

Rotate out velvet or bouclé covers and bring in linen, cotton or open-weave textures. Lighter weaves scatter light rather than absorb it, adding airiness without changing the palette dramatically.

Throws

Swap out heavy knits and sherpa fleece for lightweight linen or muslin throws in warm neutrals or soft sage. Drape loosely rather than folding neatly. Patrice’s spring styling is relaxed, not structured.

Rugs

If your budget allows, rotating to a lighter-toned natural fiber rug, such as jute, seagrass or a pale wool, can brighten an entire room. Even rolling back the rug to reveal more flooring can shift the feel immediately.

Small décor pieces

Replace dark ceramic vessels or heavy sculptural objects with lighter-weight rattan, cane, bamboo or pale stoneware. Natural materials with open structures allow light to pass around them rather than stopping it.

Patrice cautions against stripping a room back entirely, though. “You don’t want to remove everything; that isn’t the goal here. What you’re really after is light. You still want warmth and interest, but you can achieve it by using materials that work with natural daylight rather than against it.”

Patrice also advises using a technique called spring layering, saying, “Work in three tones drawn from the same natural family. A sandy jute rug, a warm cream linen throw, and a single soft terracotta cushion will feel cohesive and intentional. Introduce one accent color, like a dusty sage, soft blush, or chalky blue, through a single cushion or vase rather than across multiple items.”

The expert explains that texture contrast also matters. Pair matte with shine, rough with smooth. A rough-textured basket next to a smooth ceramic vase, or a coarse-weave cushion alongside a fine linen throw, creates visual depth without relying on color to do all the work.

What makes this approach valuable for homeowners is its reversibility and low cost. None of these changes requires a decorator, a skip, or a weekend of disruption.

“My rule is deliberate,” Patrice says. “The swap must be achievable in an afternoon, using pieces most people already own or can source affordably.

“People underestimate how much the stuff in a room controls how that room feels. Textiles and accessories are the variables. Change those, and you change the space. Spring is the perfect moment to prove that to yourself.”
