A new food bank in Fort Myers, Florida being developed by Ryan Companies, offers a clearly defined model for how design can support dignity, efficiency and community impact.
Earlier this month, Ryan Companies marked a key milestone on the 110,000-square-foot Harry Chapin Food Bank, completing an on-site tilt-wall panel that brings the building one step closer to actualizing its purpose-driven design. The project embraces a client-choice model, designing the food pantry to function like a grocery store so clients can select food without fear of judgement or stigma.
Strategic design highlights that reinforce this approach include:
- Creating seamless circulation between warehouse, volunteer and workroom spaces
- Prioritizing clear wayfinding, signage and warm lighting to reduce stress
- Incorporating flexible community spaces that reflect local culture and values
- Planning for scalability and future expansion without disrupting operations
Nick Marra, Design Project Manager at Ryan Companies, is the primary designer on the Harry Chapin Food Bank project and focused on striking the right balance between operational needs and creating a welcoming, human-centered experience.
