BŌK Modern, an innovator in architectural metal systems, announces the release of the Bolt-On Balcony, a groundbreaking solution for modern buildings that
reimagines the conventional balcony system. Purposefully engineered to eliminate common pain points such as water intrusion, heavy structural demands, and unsightly support elements, the Bolt On Balcony offers a streamlined, architecturally clean approach that integrates seamlessly with building façades.
Central to the innovation is BŌK’s patented Plate Truss™ technology. The Bolt-On Balcony employs a folded plate design that creates an integrated truss structure with fewer
components and enhanced strength. This system enables the entire balcony to be supported by just two vertical attachment points at the façade, which connect to framing members already present in the structure. The design eliminates the need for cantilevered steel, excessive welding, and rod-and-clevis hangers, offering a cleaner visual result and a dramatically
simplified installation process.
“The bolt-on balcony, with its integrated plate truss support system, not only results in a more elegant aesthetic, but can be manufactured in 100% aluminum with no risk of future rusting compromising the integrity of the system,” said BŌK Modern co-founder, Russ Naylor.
The development of this system was driven by widespread industry concerns around waterproofing and liability. Traditional cantilevered balcony systems—especially in wood-framed buildings—often lead to water intrusion issues, as framing members penetrate deeply into the structure, allowing moisture to wick inside and cause structural damage over time. The Bolt-On Balcony, which mounts fully outside the building envelope, eliminates these concerns entirely by keeping the structure external and minimizing disruption to the waterproofing layers.
An additional innovation lies in BŌK’s approach to balcony floor design. Unlike typical plar toward the balcony edges. These side channels can then be connected to downspouts, protecting both the building and the residents below from unwanted water exposure. Installation is further streamlined thanks to the Bolt-On Balcony’s kit-of-parts construction. Delivered flat-packed, the system can be fully assembled on the ground and lifted into place or built on-site using standard tools. This approach eliminates the need for on-site welding and complex coordination between multiple subcontractors. In many cases, a single trade can complete the entire balcony installation—reducing labor costs and enabling greater quality control.
The system’s materials were chosen with both performance and sustainability in mind. Available in powder-coated or anodized aluminum, as well as Cor-Ten Steel, the balconies are engineered for long-term durability. Aluminum offers corrosion resistance even in the event of surface damage, while Cor-Ten is designed to develop a protective rust-like patina that seals and strengthens over time. Both materials avoid the use of VOC-heavy coatings common in traditional steel systems. In addition, the Cor-Ten steel can be laser cut in an infinite variety of patterns and the painted aluminum balconies can be finished in any color or anodized in a variety of shades from clear to bronzes, to black.
The Bolt-On Balcony is compatible with wood, concrete, and steel construction types, and has been engineered to meet wind and seismic loads for site-specific conditions—with no height limitations. Designed primarily for multifamily housing, hospitality, and student housing, the system has also been installed in affordable housing projects due to its economical construction and long-term performance benefits. Looking ahead, BŌK Modern is developing additional accessories and enhancements for the Bolt-On Balcony system, including modular IPE wood flooring that can be easily replaced if damaged, expanded balcony sizes up to 10 feet in width, and integrated lighting options built into railing panels for an ambient nighttime experience.
