Western Kentucky University claimed its first national title in the American Society of Civil Engineers‘ Concrete Canoe Competition, highlighting the ingenuity, teamwork and technical expertise shaping the next generation of civil engineers.
The victory came during the 2026 ASCE Civil Engineering Student Championships at Fairmont State University in Fairmont, West Virginia, where hundreds of students from across the U.S., China and India gathered to showcase the skills they’ll soon bring to the construction and infrastructure industries.
ASCE’s flagship Concrete Canoe Competition challenges teams to design, engineer and build a concrete canoe before putting it to the ultimate test on the water. Teams earn points through a combination of design reports, technical presentations, craftsmanship and race performance.
Western Kentucky’s winning canoe, the USS Alliance, featured a newly engineered hull designed to improve speed and maneuverability while honoring the American Revolution-era warship as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration. The university also earned top honors for its technical presentation and final product, building on several years of strong finishes to capture the program’s first Society-wide championship.
The championships also recognized Johns Hopkins University for winning the Sustainable Solutions Competition and Pennsylvania State University for capturing the Surveying Competition, with both programs earning their first national titles.
Beyond the trophies, the annual event reinforces ASCE’s commitment to preparing future civil engineers through hands-on learning that mirrors real-world project challenges. From structural design and surveying to sustainability and project management, the competitions provide students with practical experience while helping strengthen the pipeline of talent entering the engineering and construction professions.
