Tackling The Pest Control Pandemic From The Bottom Up

America and its huge urbanized centers have a problem with pests. Rankings show just how severe this problem is becoming in major cities and now, according to NPR, there are new pests to contend with in the form of spotted lanternflies. Urbanization won’t stop; there has been a degree of city flight since the coronavirus pandemic, but little permanency in that trend. Furthermore, this has only grown smaller towns and villages, creating more conurbations and an extension of what is already afflicted by pests. As a result, new developments must take into account pest resistant measures - but how?
Proper building routines
The most important principles are the most simple, too. Properly sealing a property, ensuring that airflow bricks aren’t safe harbor for pests, and doing regular inspections to look for breaches in the walls, is what the EPA recommend as the best possible way for building managers to prevent infestations and the damage that comes from that. When it comes to legal proceedings in the case of an infestation, this will also help to fulfill the duties of constructors and building managers in preventing pest infestation and ensuring that liability for poor maintenance, and the attraction of pests, falls on tenants. Where regular checks and maintenance haven’t been carried out, or the original build was of insufficient quality, it will fall on the builder, operator and owner.
Building key infrastructure
Despite the best building plans, there will always be challenges associated with properties. As CBS highlights, cities have taken drastic plans ranging from the releasing of feral cats into local ecosystems through to poisoning suspected water sources to deal with vermin. They are very hard to keep out, and so the best response is to ensure that everything within the building is secured. Ensure that high quality cabling is used, sturdy materials for piping and gas works, and in general build the property in such a way that it’s a bad proposition for rodents - where they won’t be able to prosper.
The insect challenge
Alongside larger vermin, there is an ongoing and serious problem associated with insects. Mosquitos, flies, and other types of pest can bring in disease and cause serious deterioration of the woodwork within the property. Apart from retaining high levels of hygiene, the best way to prevent this is through properly sealed buildings and high quality ventilation systems. Furthermore, this will also help building operators and tenants to minimize their energy costs - something which should be a virtue for any new building operation, and something which will help to ensure the onward profitability and suitability of the building.
Pests are a huge problem in American commercial space. A lot can be done to keep them out, and should be done, too - but it’s also important to come to terms with the fact that pests will get in. Prevention, and making a property as difficult as possible for pests to penetrate, is the principle that will underpin a profitable operation.
