Committed to positively impacting not only its customers but also its community, Storefloors has again supported the efforts of Vice President Julia Versteegh in her organization of the annual Happy Club beach trip, now in its seventeenth year.
The Happy Club is a volunteer-run organization of the Metro Atlanta YMCA that encourages the socialization of young adults with developmental disabilities. The beach trip provides Happy Club members with the opportunity to participate in social activities, independent of their parents or caretakers.
This year, 43 Happy Club members and 17 chaperones vacationed in Orange Beach, Alabama, from August 18 to 21, where they participated in activities such as swimming in the ocean; beach walks; dinners and dancing; and a sunset dolphin cruise.
The beach trip also offers the Happy Club with the opportunity to increase awareness about individuals with differing abilities to those with whom it comes in contact. “Our group has an amazing ability to touch people we meet during the trip,” says Versteegh. “We are able to show that people with disabilities are just like everyone else, even though they may look different, talk different, or use wheel chairs or walkers.”
In support of Versteegh’s commitment to the Happy Club, Storefloors allows her to complete trip planning on company time, using company resources, and offers her paid time off for the event. Versteegh has been volunteering as Program Manager of the Happy Club for 23 years.
