Skanska has reached a key milestone at the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s (NCDEQ) Reedy Creek Laboratory in Raleigh, celebrating the project’s official topping out.
The $65 million renovation and expansion project is transforming the existing facility into a modern, collaborative environment that supports the department’s critical research and lab operations—all while those operations remain fully active.
At the heart of the multi-phase project is a new 33,000-square-foot administration and visitor’s center that will seamlessly connect the existing chemistry and water quality buildings. In addition, 53,000 square feet of existing space is being renovated to create modular laboratory areas, modern offices, research zones and new conference rooms.
Plans also include a courtyard to enhance the campus environment, and the conversion of part of the air quality building into a central energy plant that will supply mechanical and electrical systems to the entire campus.
“This is critically important and complex lab modernization work taking place right in the heart of Raleigh, and we are proud to work with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to make this happen while maintaining full operational continuity for the researchers and scientists who are working to create a safer, healthier North Carolina,” says Mark Balling, Executive VP of Skanska USA Building’s Mid-Atlantic region.
The topping out ceremony brought together representatives from NCDEQ, Skanska and the project’s subcontractors and workers to recognize the teamwork, craftsmanship and commitment driving the effort forward.
