For those who work in the construction industry, you know better than anyone just how important safety equipment is on the job. Not only does it help you to do your job properly, but it allows you to do so in a manner that protects you from injury, and potentially even death. With that said, any time you need to shop for safety wear and equipment, it needs to be done with the utmost of care and caution to ensure you get the best quality item out there.

If you are in the market for a new tower harness, either as your first one or to replace one that is becoming worn, there are some key things to be on the lookout for. You can use this as a handy shopping guide.

Go with a Trusted Name Brand

The first tip is to stick to the trusted name brands. Although there may be some off-brand tower harnesses that are just as good, when you’re working on elevated structures, it’s just not worth taking the risk. Opting for a tried and tested brand means that they are using quality parts, materials, and construction, giving you extra peace of mind.

Understand That a Tower Harness Differs from a Universal Safety Harness

It’s also important to note that a tower harness, although a type of safety harness, is different than the universal safety harnesses you will find. A tower harness addresses the situation you will be using it in, i.e., the work you are carrying out.

Make Sure it Meets OSHA Guidelines

Of course, any tower harness you are considering also needs to meet OSHA guidelines. These are the Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards, which are determined by the United States Department of Labor. These guidelines are very strict, but they of course are there to keep you safe.

It Needs to Be Comfortable

Just because the tower harness is meant to keep you safe while working at heights, it doesn’t mean it can’t be comfortable at the same time. You need to be able to move around and do your job without it impeding you, so comfort very much needs to be a factor. One feature that can help make the harness more comfortable is padded shoulders, which is relatively common in well-made tower harnesses.

Make Sure the Harness is Adjustable

Because not every person is the same shape or size, the harness should also be adjustable. It needs to fit you snugly, so adjustable straps will ensure this happens. As you start to look at just how many straps there are on these harnesses, it becomes clearer just how important it is to be able to adjust them.

Look Into the Type and Placement of the Rings

Finally, you want to be mindful of what type of rings the harness has (for example D-ring, V-ring), and where they are. Also, the breaking strength should be a factor.
By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll be able to move forward and make an informed decision when it comes to purchasing a tower harness.
