Rosendin, the nation’s largest employee-owned electrical contractor, has begun work on the new UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital in San Francisco. The $4.3 billion project at the University of California, San Francisco’s flagship campus at Parnassus Heights is one of the nation’s most innovative hospitals under construction, dubbed “the hospital of the future.”
In August 2020, Rosendin was selected to be part of the project team that includes preconstruction and design-build work for a 15-story outpatient tower, led by general contractor Herrero Boldt Webcor, a tri-venture partnership between Herrero Builders Inc., The Boldt Company, and Webcor. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in April and demolition of the existing building is underway. When completed in 2030, the 869,550 sq. ft. plan will transform the historic campus with a state-of-the-art hospital.
“We are proud to bring our skilled teams to this exciting project with UCSF Health that will directly benefit the community and advance the future of healthcare,” said Angela Hart, Rosendin Executive Vice President. “Rosendin has a strong record of success building large-scale, complex projects with our partners at Herrero Boldt Webcor. We are confident we can deliver exceptional work for our hometown hospital.”
Rosendin has been actively working on Make Ready projects for the new hospital campus for several years. During the build phase, the electrical contractor will tie facilities to the existing central utility plant and bring in utilities for future expansion. Plans also include renovating parts of the Long and Moffit hospitals at Parnassus Heights.
Rosendin’s work is part of a comprehensive, 30-year construction plan that will transform the Parnassus Heights campus into an innovative health and research campus that will attract global talent while meeting future demand for care. The design includes a healing habitat incorporating natural light, plants, and trees into the building’s architecture. When completed, the design will increase overall inpatient bed capacity by 37% and expand the emergency department by nearly 65%.
The large project team includes the architect of record HDR and design consultant Herzog & de Meuron, as well as teams from Arup, Cal Drywall Co., Mazzetti, McGuire & Hester, Nabih Youssef & Associates, Southland Industries, and TEECOM.
“As a Bay area company that’s been around almost as long as the hospital, Rosendin is honored to be part of this large team building one of the greatest landmark projects in San Francisco,” said Thomas Will, Rosendin Division Manager. “We are invested in the region and respect long-term investments that support local companies and local workers, which benefits the entire community.”
In addition to a 30% local hiring target for the construction project, UCSF pledged to create 1,000 union jobs and establish new training programs. It has also invested $20 million in improving public transportation in the region.
Rosendin was established in 1919 in San Jose, 12 years after the University of California built the medical research and teaching hospital at Parnassus Heights. Rosendin partners with the IBEW and NECA to provide a robust workforce on large-scale healthcare, hospitality, transportation, and mission-critical infrastructure projects. Recent projects in the Bay area include the San Francisco International Airport’s Harvey Milk Terminal 1 project, 75 Howard St. Condominiums, and Chase Center.
