Project management and owner’s representative firm MGAC has announced a new Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for an Artistic Ideas Competition for the new National Museum for the US Navy (NMUSN). Further information is below and you can access the full RFQ here or ise  registration link.

The Project

The NHHC envisions a campus comprised of a new building and ceremonial courtyard, as well as the potential renovation of existing historical buildings. The campus would consist of approximately 270,000 square feet and housing approximately 100,000 square feet of net gallery space.

Navy leadership has a long-held vision to build a state-of-the-art museum that will create a living memorial to the U.S. Navy’s heritage of victory, valor, and sacrifice. It will give all the visitors of the future museum a greater understanding of the role the U.S. Navy has on ensuring America’s national and economic security through its history and demonstrate the Navy’s vital importance in today’s global environment. The new NMUSN campus will be an educational, cultural, and ceremonial center for all visitors and for active-duty Sailors, veterans, and the public.

The Artistic Ideas Competition

The Naval History & Heritage Command (NHHC) is currently engaged in a feasibility analysis phase of the development of a new National Museum of the United States Navy (NMUSN) campus in Washington, DC. The NHHC is taking the next steps in its planning, concept programming, and development efforts to eventually build a museum. Due to the complexity, size, scope, and breadth of this groundbreaking project, the NHHC seeks to receive high-quality artistic concepts and ideas for the project by soliciting input from a broad field of participants, ultimately generating public interest in the project and supporting innovation.

This Request for Qualifications (RFQ) is intended to prescreen qualified respondents and select five finalists to assist in developing artistic ideas for the new National Museum of the United States Navy. Qualifications will be broken into two pools, the Professional Pool, which will include professional organizations, and the General Pool, which will include individuals. The chosen finalists in this competition will provide conceptual and artistic ideas for the new museum campus, which will comprise multiple buildings, the main entrance, a central museum atrium, exhibits, a theater, food services, retail spaces, outdoor areas, macro artifacts, as well as historical preservation and security requirements.

Respondents who meet the minimum set qualifications and are selected as finalists by the NHHC to participate in the Artistic Ideas Competition will receive a stipend of $48,000 each to develop their submission. The respondents which are selected as finalists will then be evaluated by a selected Jury from NHHC and Navy leadership who will make evaluations and assessments on which conceptual artistic ideas may be considered for further conceptual development.
