Developers built almost 140 million square feet of new retail space between 2002 and 2008 and only about 20 million square feet in the years since then, according to a report from ChainLinks Advisors. The trend might make sense in light of the recession and the shift to online shopping, but demand for Class A space has been up in some markets for several years and retailers are increasingly scrambling to find quality space, the report says.
