Loctite®, an industry-leading provider of adhesive and sealant solutions for pro and DIY projects, has created a fall DIY home maintenance checklist with ideas
for updating and maintaining a home to enhance its energy efficiency and prepare it for winter. Routine maintenance protects a home’s comfort and energy efficiency,
which helps maintain the home’s value, lowers energy bills, and also reduces the environmental impact of replacing items unnecessarily.
“Owning a home is one of the largest investments many make, and one that requires routine maintenance to optimize the energy efficiency of a home and reduce costly
repairs and replacements,” said Frank Ziegler, Loctite Senior Brand Manager. “At Loctite, we’re committed to simplifying that maintenance for homeowners, providing
easy-to-use adhesive solutions to keep your home comfortable and looking good.”
The Loctite Fall DIY Home Maintenance Checklist features three projects perfect for any home DIY weekend warrior looking for simple ways to prepare their home for
colder weather:
Seal door and window gaps and cracks – The Department of Energy estimates that potential energy savings from reducing drafts in a home may range from 5% to 30% per year. Look for any openings around doors and windows that may have developed over time, and use a polyurethaneinsulating foam sealant, like Loctite’s TITE FOAM® Window & Door, to seal out air and moisture to help save money on energy bills. An attached straw applicator will make it easy to fill, seal and effectively insulate these gaps and cracks.
Minimize basement and crawl space drafts – Similar to door and window gaps and cracks, drafts from basements and crawl spaces can leave you feeling chilly while also reducing the energy efficiency of your home. Identify drafts by walking in these areas with a lit candle; locations where it goes out or flickers indicate a draft. To eliminate, use a polyurethane-insulating foam sealant designed for filling and sealing larger spaces.
Keep pests out – Keep the creepy crawlies looking for a warm space this winter out of your home by checking baseboards for any loose spots, cracks or holes. Each provides an easy access point for bugs to enter your home and should be repaired. To reattach loose baseboards, look for a constructionstrength adhesive that can be repositioned for a few minutes to allow for easy placement and needed adjustments. Any openings, gaps or cracks can be sealed with a foam like Loctite’s TITE FOAM® Gaps & Cracks for another level
of pest prevention.
Loctite is committed to being a pioneer in sustainability. In addition to its focus on energy efficiency the brand also provides simple, long-lasting adhesive solutions that
help to reduce waste that ends up in landfills by giving everyday items, including furniture and building materials, a second chance. This year, they partnered with the
Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity on the Loctite 2nd Chance House, transforming a condemned house into a new, eco-friendly home for a deserving
Northeast Ohio family.
