Across the world, mobile devices are a key determinant for the amount of time spent online. Despite the heterogeneous nature of the world, people communicate, share informative content, fun, idea within milliseconds. It also gives businesses a way to engage with customers. Social Media can be very influential on society in both positive and negative ways. It gives people a way to stay in touch with people who live far away. One positive impact of information of social media is in the dissemination of information in today’s world. Because it has been said that information is power. Without a means of distributing information, people cannot harness the power. Platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and others have made it possible to access information at the click of button. It has also been useful in educating people, especially on urgent global matters like global warming, and how to conserve and reuse energy.

Impacts of social media
In the years since social media platforms came into being, it has had some effects on how people of the world now view things. It has gone from a platform to meet different people and interact with them, to one that has now hit the very core of human existence and is now part of our daily living. Social media has had many positive as well as negative impact on different spheres of our lives, from business to politics, work, productivity, morals, etc. Some major impacts are discussed further.
Social Media’s Impact on Education and Training
Social Media has contributed to the increase in long-distance online learning. Social Media has made it easy for a lot of persons to go online to unlearn and relearn about their occupation. YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, wikis and blogs are now commonly used as learning tools in the society, and other educational institutions for paper writers to pass across learning material.
In recent years, different social media platforms have been used as a means for learning and to pass knowledge across to many.
Despite issues of lack of privacy and some instances of cheating among long-distance learners, this has not deterred social platforms from being used in education. Companies, nowadays, look for candidates who hold skills on social media as well.
The moral Challenges of social media
One of many pitfalls of social media is that, it has affected our morality as a species. Lack of privacy and cyber bullying are two of such examples.
Loss of privacy:
Social media users have had to deal with threats like invasion of privacy, identity theft, misuse of information, appropriation, stalking, and personal attacks. Privacy is right to be left alone. Anything called private should be done in private, anything private done in public ceases to be private. Most times, social media users are at fault for this, as they make private information public. This is mostly common among the celebrities. This is caused by a misunderstanding of what should be left private, and what should be made public, and this is a reason for problems in the professional and private lives of individuals.
Cyber bullying:
Teenagers always want to fit in, and have therefore been subjected to feeling an unnecessary pressure to grow up too soon in an online world. Being teenagers, rather than get assignment help, they can misuse social media platforms to spread rumors, share videos aimed at destroying reputations and to blackmail others.
The Effects of Social Media on the world of work
According to CareerBuilder’s 2016 social media recruitment survey, 60 percent of employers use social networking sites to research job candidates.
There has been a lot of professional social network available on social media platforms that will allow people to create and market their personal brand. Many job seekers now get resume help on social media as 19 to 20 percent of hiring managers now make their hirings decisions based on numerous information that are easily available on social media.
The Effects of social media on politics:
Social media has made it easier to spread information quickly. Because of the timelines of different social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook often move very quickly, viewers don’t often have time to verify what they have seen. Some memes are created to be funny, cute, and outrageous. Others, however are intends to be misleading. In comparison to other media, social networks over the years have been key factor in the role of electoral politics. 62 percent of people get their news from social media. Every media houses such as; CNN, BBC, Aljazeera, etc. have their pages on every social media platform because news is timeliness. The president of Untied State of America, Donald Trump is a fan of Twitter. He always posts on his timeline and this allows American people and people from other countries and continent to communicate freely, and it generates more traffic to the page.
The impact of social media on society
There is no society without communication. Social networks grow off interaction among people, and they become more powerful with their growth. Almost one-third of the world’s population are on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Social Media has helped to publicize social, environmental, ethical, and political ills. Giving them more visibility. Increased visibility of many of the issues facing the society has caused a shift in power to the mass of the people instead of the hands of just a few.
People have been able to connect via social media to do things together, the advent of social media makes people with same dream meet each other and archive their common goal.
In the period before the advent of social media, there were many activist, and there used to be much activism. But nowadays with the advent of social media where some activists make complaint about some societal issues with pseudo account; even hiding their identity. Social Media is now slowly killing real activism and making people very slack.
Social sharing has made it easy for people to pick up their mobile phones, and sit with their computers to express their feelings and concerns on societal ills without having to engage in any real life campaigns to cause a change. Most people now show their support by pressing like or share button and adding a few comments.
According to a research, people who give public endorsement do so to satisfy other people’s opinions while those that endorse privately do so because they believe the cause to be in line with their values.

 Social Media and Inter-Personal Relationships
Social Media has helped and encourage people from different tribes with different culture; norms, beliefs, and values to form artificial bond instead of actually making real friend. Many now prefer to stay up on these platforms and interact with their virtual friends than sit down and have an actual conversation with the surrounding people in the real world. But the word, “friend” as use on most social media platforms don’t carry the same level of intimacy as conventional friendship does, where people relate with themselves and help solve each other’s problem in times of need. Social media has rather encouraged a farce of a lifestyle where people lie and pretend to be who they aren’t, just to impress their unsuspecting virtual friends.
Conclusion
Social media has become an integral part of our lives. Although it has its negatives, there are many positive impacts as well, that we can look to and hold on to going forward. We all have to learn to use these platforms the right way, and the positives will outweigh the negatives.
