IKEA is on track for a new, larger store in Burbank, Calif., relocating the Swedish retailer’s oldest store in the western U.S. Groundbreaking is expected this fall, with the store opening planned for spring 2017. The current 242,000-square-foot IKEA Burbank, its first in California and sixth in the United States, opened November 1990 at San Fernando Boulevard. The future 456,000-square-foot store will be built west of San Fernando Boulevard and south of Providencia Avenue, less than one mile from the original store. The design will be similar to IKEA’s other stores, for example, the new one has a solar photovoltaic array atop its roof. IKEA plans to install a similar solar energy system as part of the relocated store.
