B2W Software, a leading provider of enterprise-class construction software, services and solutions, announced that Utah Valley University (UVU) has leveraged the company’s  construction project estimating software, B2W Estimate, to achieve Top Five placement, within the  Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Regions 6 & 7 student competition.
Ed Kluber, Faculty Advisor and Adjunct Professor at Utah Valley University, elaborates on his decision to use B2W, “These construction competitions are extremely challenging, so we needed to arm our students with the best possible tools to ensure a winning outcome,” said Kluber. “I rely on B2W’s software with the work I do for my own employer, and have realized the benefits first hand. Leveraging this solution for my students was an easy choice.” Kluber also manages estimating for Condie Construction, a Utah based specialist in pipeline and infrastructure installation.
The  ASC competition is a comprehensive educational opportunity enabling college students to apply classroom lessons to real-world construction projects.  As part of the process, construction companies offer active project challenges for students to solve, helping them prepare for future careers as construction management professionals.
The primary competition objective required participants to effectively manage hundreds of pieces of equipment, analyze labor hours, accurately estimate costs, and coordinate with supervisors.  In the past, UVU students leveraged Excel spreadsheets and other rudimentary tools to “guesstimate” budgets and ensure accurate deadlines – which provided little value. This legacy method changed when the university joined the B2W Educate Program, gaining access to B2W Software’s specialized construction estimating tools.
“As the number of high schools and universities offering a construction management curriculum continues to grow, students must have access to the latest technology in order to be effective in the real world,” said Paul McKeon, CEO of B2W Software. “Our B2W Educate Program is specifically designed to help students combine classroom knowledge with proven software tools that are making an impact within the construction industry.”
Using the company’s B2W Estimate software, students achieved top placement in the CM Challenge preliminary construction project competition.  Leveraging this new-found confidence, students then entered the ASC Regions 6 and 7 regional event, where they competed against 20 other schools and were observed by 200 attending sponsor companies. Judges noted the students for their high level of organization, knowledge and analysis of production, crews, and subcontractors. As a result of their B2W Estimate-enhanced presentation, the students achieved fourth place and two students were offered employment from competition sponsors.
“I saw a huge jump in the students’ confidence from the competition’s beginning to its end, and I attribute this to B2W Estimate’s ability to help them organize the many project requirements,” Kluber noted.
“There’s a lot of construction management technology on the market today, but unfortunately, most of it is simply a glorified spreadsheet,” said Eric Linfield, UVU Department Chair, Construction Technologies.  “B2W truly takes the estimating process to the next level and was really the turning point in helping us excel in the competition.”
B2W Estimate is the industry’s most powerful, cost-effective estimating and bidding tool.  Intuitive and easy to use, the feature-rich technology manages the entire process end-to-end, while helping estimators get results in days – versus weeks or months. B2W Estimate is an integral part of B2W’s ONE (Operational Networked Elements) Platform which is the first suite of construction management software to provide in-depth insight into the entire construction process.
