Understanding that the façade sets expectations and defines the overall building structure, the architecture and design team at Equatorin Stockholm tapped global surfacing leader Cosentino to reinvigorate a block of Stockholm’s inner city centre called Grävlingen 12.
To breathe new life to the 350-year old block, the Equator team chose Cosentino’s celebrated Dekton series for the façade, taking the building from a ‘walk by’ building to a ‘stop by’ retail destination for locals and travelers alike.
“The choice of material was made with both future needs and a connection to the history of Grävlingen in mind,” explained Jana Becker, Architect of Equator Stockholm. “The stone-like material gives a feeling of weight that stands for durability and security, which are desirable expressions in our street spaces.”
Dekton’s warm, brown hue provides the property with weight and a striking appearance. Unlike natural stone, Dekton allows for strong vertical grids—a key design feature for the Equator team as they wanted to offer a different aesthetic during the day and in the evening, with the facades’ slats casting shadows during the day and integrated LED lights becoming a focal point at night.
Created from a sophisticated blend of raw materials including glass, quartz and porcelain, Dekton is completely unique to the market. As a carbon-neutral composite stone, the series provides UV stability, stain/graffiti resistance, and is sustainable. Dekton is completely reusable—once a new design is slated for a project, the slabs can be repurposed or broken down to become new slabs.
