Finding a job in the current market can be difficult, depending on your career path. One in-demand field is that of construction, as there is always work that needs to be done, whether that is from a government-funded standpoint to commercial or residential construction projects. Here are some things to consider when updating your resume.

Field Of Expertise

When applying for work, one major consideration that you need to make is to look for jobs and roles that you are familiar with. This will give you an edge when it comes to increasing your chances of getting a job. Like all industries and markets, there are always specialties and experts that you will go to in order to get your jobs done, and construction is no different. Different clients will look at different construction companies to complete their jobs, depending on their needs, and those companies may want skilled laborers that have the experience necessary to do their jobs more efficiently and in a shorter amount of time. Of course, not everyone is expected to have such specified job expertise, and many offer general labor roles. There will always be entry-level jobs you can attain through your contacts and networks, as well as trade school coop programs to help get your foot in the door.

Formatting And Editing

One of the basics of updating your resume is simple formatting. People get so concerned over what they put on their resume and how they present themselves that they forget to do the simple things. When you are building and updating your application, remember to use samples from here to update your resume as it will give you an idea of what works and what is effective. Having a well-formatted, clean, and easy-to-read resume alone speaks volumes to how you are as an individual, as it represents your ability to communicate and stay organized.

Experience Over Education

When you are updating and submitting your resume, one of the most important aspects you need to look at is what is most applicable for the jobs you are applying to. When it comes to construction work, experience is held in much higher regard and with greater value than education. You want to highlight your experience as it most applies to the job. Indicate what you did and how those skills transfer to the new job you are applying for. Even if you did not work construction in the past, your labor jobs can indicate your qualifications in terms of physical capability, as well as knowledge and experience with tools and equipment.

Education Is Still Key

Of course, you cannot discredit education when it comes to any resume, as it is applicable for some positions you are sending your resume in for. In particular, your education will help when you are applying for managerial and supervisor roles. As you climb the job ladder, it will be wise to keep up with certifications if you want to continue to improve your job positions and roles.
Make sure that you keep your resume up to date when applying for jobs. It is essential that you review your resume frequently, to not only maintain current job qualifications but to be sure about editing and formatting. This all contributes to how likely you are to get a job.
