Coborn’s uses Honeywell refrigerant over CO2

Refrigeration accounts for a major part of a supermarket’s total energy use (as much as 50 percent or more). Coborn’s, a Midwest retail chain with more than 50 supermarkets and 120 stores, has selected Honeywell’s Solstice® N40 (R-448A) refrigerant to achieve energy savings of up to 16 percent, as well as meet environmental regulations.

Coborn’s selected Solstice N40 after an extensive comparison to carbon dioxide (CO2). The company determined that a conventional system using Solstice N40 would cost 20-30 times less than a CO2 system, and it would have better serviceability due to a wider availability of parts and an extensive network of trained technicians. Coborn’s plans to use Solstice N40 in new stores and also retrofit existing stores with it.
