As the construction industry continues to evolve, the need for skilled trade professionals remains constant. In fact, the National Center for Construction Education and Research reports that 53% of the industry is expected to retire by 2036.

To inspire the next generation of construction professionals, ClarkDietrich—North America’s largest manufacturer of cold-formed steel framing and accessories—is taking steps to engage prospective and early-career tradespeople with hands-on experiences to modern building techniques and resources.

On June 24, ClarkDietrich, whose headquarters is located in the greater Cincinnati area, teamed up with the Ohio Carpenters’ Apprenticeship Program (OHCAP) to host an interactive training and networking class at OHCAP’s Monroe Campus.

As part of the event, first-year apprentices learned about modern framing methods, including hands-on experience working with steel framing, which has gained prominence in recent years for its strength, versatility, resiliency and efficiency.

“Promoting workforce development is something we’re really passionate about—we want to invest in the future of our industry and be part of the solution for the current lack of skilled labor,” says Jennifer Edgar, VP of Marketing for ClarkDietrich. “And being able to provide an opportunity like this so close to home is just that much more meaningful. Though we have a national footprint, the Cincinnati community is close to our hearts, and it means a lot to us to be able to support the local workforce in any way we can.”

The apprentices constructed three mock steel-framed walls, including nonstructural and structural, and learned how ClarkDietrich’s labor-saving products can support their work. The mock wall builds offered tangible experience installing products like Danback®Spazzer®MaxTrak®FastBridge™ clips and RedHeader PRO®, and more.

Importantly, the day also gave the apprentices an opportunity to network with category managers from ClarkDietrich, who were able to answer questions and emphasize that they are available as a resource. Many of ClarkDietrich’s best product ideas come directly from those building with them, which is why the company values having open lines of communication with its customers.

OHCAP’s four-year apprenticeship program follows a “learn while you earn” approach, providing its apprentices four weeks of classes each year while they are already employed by a local contractor. The program is a practical solution to filling the labor gap while allowing workers to earn competitive wages as they build their skills.

“My dad’s a union carpenter, and he was telling me about it,” says Collin Thompson, one of the apprentices. “It’s got a lot of good health benefits and, well, I just really like framing,”
