When it comes to commercial building design, few elements are as underrated as the railing system. It is essential for ensuring the safety, functionality, aesthetics, and ADA compliance of all interior and exterior spaces. With a variety of commercial railings available, it can be a bit of a challenge identifying the ideal solution for your application. To help navigate the process, keep reading as we explore the best commercial railings for high-traffic spaces.

Importance of Commercial Railings

Railing systems play a multi-faceted role in commercial building design:

  • Safety – railings are essential for promoting the safety of a high-traffic commercial space. They secure perimeters to define space, provide fall prevention from elevated areas, and help patrons navigate staircases.
  • Functionality – railings help maximize every square inch of a building by making space safe and accessible. Although commonly used interchangeably, “handrails” are specifically designed for grabbing, whereas “guardrails” are designed to block falls. Both are essential for maximizing functionality of a commercial building.
  • Aesthetics – The railing system must be able to carefully balance the lines between form and function. For example, there are numerous types of commercial stair design ideas created with a specific end result in mind, such as a “social” staircase. This aims to promote interaction between patrons going up and down the staircase. If the railing system does not enhance aesthetics and create a welcoming ambiance, this type of railing system will not serve its purpose.
  • ADA compliance – there are strict code requirements when it comes to railings for people with disabilities. The railing system must serve all of the functions listed above while guaranteeing ADA compliance

Many types of commercial railing systems can accomplish some–but not all–of these diverse functions. Therefore, it is crucial to partner with an experienced supplier to ensure a comprehensive railing system for your building.

Outdoor vs Indoor Commercial Railings

The demands on commercial railing systems will vary based on outdoor vs indoor applications.

Outdoor railings must be designed to withstand forces of nature. They need a high-degree of moisture and UV resistance. Fall prevention is also a more pressing concern in many types of outdoor areas, such as rooftop decks.

Indoor railings will likely experience greater traffic. Staircases and mezzanines will face daily demand. The railings must be able to withstand frequent grabbing and regular cleaning. Aesthetics are also a top priority in commercial interior design.

Types of Commercial Railings

There are numerous types of commercial railing materials from which to choose. Each has its specific advantages and drawbacks, depending on the application.

Wood

Wood is a classic railing material. It creates a rustic, natural appearance that many people find appealing. However, it is one of the least durable, highest-maintenance options for commercial applications. It has little utility for outdoor purposes, and indoor wood railings must be regularly stained/sealed to avoid absorbing hand grime.

Wrought Iron

Wrought iron is popular for its bold aspect. The dark color provides stunning contrast to lighter-colored walls. It also has a small amount of flexibility, making it a bit more forgiving than other types of heavy-duty materials. The downside is that wrought iron is susceptible to rust. This makes it high maintenance as an outdoor solution and puts it at risk in interiors that frequently encounter sweaty hands. In addition, because wrought iron features small corrugations on the surface, cleaning is a challenge.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a wonderful heavy-duty railing option. It is non-corrosive, making it suitable for both interior and exterior applications. It can be cleaned with a simple wipe of a disinfecting rag. The upfront cost of stainless steel railings will be higher than most other products. In addition, while the clean industrial aspect is suitable for many commercial applications, it is not for everyone.

Aluminum

Aluminum performs similarly to stainless steel along many key consideration points. It is durable, low maintenance, and easy to clean, making it ideal for a wide range of high-traffic commercial applications. It can also be fabricated in a wider range of designs for greater aesthetic flexibility. Like stainless steel, the upfront cost will be a bit higher than lower quality railing materials.

Glass

Glass is a trending material in commercial interiors. It provides clean, elegant aesthetics while providing the full protection of a guardrail. It offers clear sight lines that work well with the open interior concept. Glass can become smudged by hand oils but is very easy to clean. Although it can be used as an outdoor railing option, it is still gaining traction in this regard.
