Each September, thousands of architects, interior designers and tile professionals discover the latest tile innovations at Cersaie, the international exhibition of ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings held annually in Bologna, Italy. This year’s 34th edition was no exception as hundreds of exhibitors from more than 40 countries showcased the most current lines in tiles, floor and wallcoverings.
Katie Michael-Battaglia, Design Director of Nemo Tile, explored the Cersaie showfloor and observed the latest surfacing trends impacting retail, residential, commercial and hospitality spaces. Some of the highlights at the 2016 show included tiles patterned on textiles and new versions of faux materials such as marble, terrazzo and metals. Here’s a look at a few notable trends Katie was most impressed by:
- Thanks to recent technological advances in digital printing, the popularity of imitation wood tiles continues. More recently, wood-look tiles have become more textured and achieve the appearance of real wood. These porcelain surfaces now showcase soft, earthy tones such as grey, white and blues. These are also being made available in multiple shapes such as chevrons and geometric petals.
- The offering of geometric shapes other than the square and rectangle has exploded. The hexagon is still very popular, but it is now seen in different forms. These are stretched to be elongated in different directions, and there are more interpretations of shapes such as rhomboids, chevrons diamonds and petals. Specifiers now have the opportunity to create simplistic or complex patterns with a multitude of shapes.
- Large format, thinner surfaces make easier and lighter installs on walls and vertical surfaces. As a result of new manufacturing techniques, these large tile have been more abundant and made more visually beautiful. These are great for clients who want a seamless, classic look as well as less joints/grout that can become more apparent over time.
