The Associated General Contractors of Georgia (AGC Georgia) partnered with Sheridan Construction in October to host construction students from high schools in 26 local counties for the “Central Georgia Skills Challenge.” The Skills Challenge was one of eight regional events held throughout Georgia for more than 2,300 students from 100-plus schools.
Competitions were held at the Central Georgia Skills Challenge are: blueprint reading, cabinetmaking, carpentry, electrical, masonry, plumbing, roofing, TeamWorks, welding and welding fabrication.
With 150 students competing in the Central Georgia Skills Challenge, 100 more will be observing in hopes of competing in the future. All students will benefit from conversations with construction industry professionals who host interactive activities for students throughout the event to help them become more familiar with specific construction trades.
“We also look forward to connecting with students to share information about rewarding careers in construction,” says Christy Kovac, President and CEO of Sheridan Construction.
AGC Georgia CEO Mike Dunham says high school instructors who teach construction-related curriculum are frontline champions for careers in the construction industry. “These professionals work hard to teach their students real-world skills and prepare them for ‘game day’ type experiences at Skills Challenges. It’s exciting to see young men and women showcasing their trade talents in an exciting atmosphere.”
Students from construction programs in the following counties are invited to compete in the Central Georgia Skills Challenge: Baldwin, Bibb, Bleckley, Butts, Crawford, Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Hancock, Henry, Houston, Jasper, Jones, Lamar, Macon, Monroe, Morgan, Newton, Peach, Pulaski, Putnam, Rockdale, Spalding, Twiggs, Wilcox and Wilkinson.
