Siemens has introduced a new circuit breaker that for the first time combines AFCI (arc-fault circuit interrupter) and GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) safety protection into one device. AFCI protection helps prevent fires in homes by detecting unsafe electrical arcs and shutting off power before the arc can start a fire. GFCI can detect when power is traveling on an unsafe path throughout the system and shuts off electrical power before causing damage to the system and/or the home itself. Combining AFCI and GFCI functions significantly increases power safety in the home and also results in easier installation and time and cost savings for electricians by avoiding the need to purchase and install two separate devices.
“Though we can’t physically see electrical power flowing through our homes, its essential that it is continuously monitored and controlled to keep our homes and families safe,” said Barry Powell, head of Siemens Low Voltage & Products. “Combining AFCI and GFCI into one device not only makes it easier and more cost-effective for the contractor to buy and install, it increases the circuit breaker’s ability to accurately manage power flow to protect homeowners from unsafe conditions that can traditionally happen without warning.”
Siemens’ dual function AFCI/GFCI circuit breaker meets the National Electric Code’s (NEC) new standard that requires AFCI and GFCI protection in kitchens and laundry areas. The breaker includes LED indicators to help in troubleshooting and is the first in its Underwriters Laboratory (UL) class to include a self-test and lockout feature that automatically and continuously tests itself for device malfunctions. The technology will trip and lock the device when protection has been compromised, resulting in extra protection and safety for the homeowner.
The new circuit breaker was recognized as one of Electrical Contractor magazine’s “Showstoppers” at the 2014 National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) meeting. The award is presented to products that represent the best of new product innovation for the electrical community.
The new circuit breaker can be purchased online via a local Siemens distributor.
