Butler Manufacturing™ is commemorating the 45th anniversary of its invention that revolutionized the building industry: the MR-24® roof system. Introduced by Butler in 1969, the MR-24 roof system is the first and most specified standing-seam roof system.

“Butler has pioneered leading-edge innovations, such as the MR-24 roof system, that result in more efficient, cost-effective buildings,” said Harry Yeatman, vice president of sales and strategy at Butler Manufacturing. “The precision-engineered design of the MR-24 roof system ensures not only the long-term performance of the roof system, but also the building itself.”
Several buildings that feature the MR-24 roof system also are nearing the 45-year mark of in-place performance, which exceeds the life expectancy of metal roofs as projected in industry studies. Currently, the MR-24 roof system protects 2.1 billion square feet of buildings across the globe.
“Whether their objective is to produce more goods in a manufacturing facility, showcase merchandise in a retail space or provide comfortable space for employees, all building owners share a common goal: to have a measurable return on investment,” said Rodger Russ, North American sales manager of roofing at Butler Manufacturing. “The roof — one of the most critical components of a building — should be selected to provide superior performance and save money based on life cycle costs.”

Recent enhancements to the MR-24 roof system include:

  • Daylighting innovations: Buildings with the MR-24 roof system are primed for daylighting. The SunLite Strip™ and RetroLite™ daylighting systems now are available for this roof system. Implementing daylighting technology can provide significant savings, as lighting-related electricity often is the highest operating expense in a building — frequently exceeding heating and cooling costs. A building equipped with a SunLite Strip or RetroLite daylighting system and lighting controls can reduce lighting-related electricity expenses by up to 70 percent.
  • Tested energy performance: The MR-24 roof system is tested in-house and independently in accordance with the most demanding, recognized specifications in the industry. In 2009, Butler Manufacturing introduced the Guarded Hot Box at its Research and Development Center in Grandview, Missouri, which certifies the energy performance of the MR-24 roof system. The Guarded Hot Box uses more than 300 sensors to accurately measure the thermal performance of roof and wall assemblies.
  • Energy-efficient finish system: Offered in a sustainable, 25-year warranted finish, the MR-24 roof system meets the reflectance and emittance standards for “cool roofs” as certified by the Cool Roof Rating Council® and is proven efficient by ENERGY STAR® standards. By lowering roof temperatures, this finish reduces the amount of energy required to cool buildings.
