Despite a condensed construction timeline and other challenges, Skanska USA completed the 365,000-plus square foot expansion and renovation of Alston + Birdโs Atlanta office on schedule. The law firmโs new space is now one of the most technologically advanced and environmentally friendly offices in Atlanta.
The Skanska construction team worked through a number of challenges throughout the build-out, and its original 22-month, three-phase schedule was shortened into a 16-month, two-phase schedule. A three-shift system was instituted to keep the job on target, resulting in staff members working on site nearly 24-hours a day, seven days per week. The demolition was completed in quadrants, and a second shift was implemented to handle the amount of debris being removed (more than 1,000 tons in total).
The project required other building coordination details, including water and electrical shutdowns and slab cutouts. Additionally, the team faced elevators limitations; only one large and one small freight elevator provided access to construction floors, which at times involved nine floors being renovated simultaneously.
