Cabela’s launched 20 years ago as an outdoor-sports retailer with stores averaging 125,000 to 250,000 square feet. The company since has began rethinking its size format and has since introduced several scaled-down stores that range from 40,000 to 125,000 square feet. The company is also rethinking its site-selection process, choosing to locate the smaller stores in metro areas near first-class retailers instead of on the outskirts of town.
