With long-standing respect in the profession, a variety of national awards under his belt and recognition as a thought leader in the community, Atlanta-based architect Eric Kronberg announces an expanded direction for his firm, and it comes with a new name to reflect the changes. Kronberg Urbanists + Architects (KUA) is now a multidisciplinary studio that utilizes architecture, urban design, real estate development and policy to make neighborhoods better.

“We started out as architects focused on designing great buildings, often working to breathe new life into overlooked existing structures through creative design,” says Kronberg, founder and principal. “Over time, we learned that a truly successful project for our clients required not just good building design but a deep understanding of factors like zoning, site design, mobility, equity and redevelopment finance.”

A natural evolution in services that occurred as the firm realized the breadth of awareness necessary to make a successful project, the holistic approach towards redevelopment enables actionable, cost-conscious solutions tailored to address challenges specific to each site.

KUA’s services include neighborhood redevelopment, architecture, urban design, development guidance, housing choice and zoning & policy assistance. Although officially featuring these services under the KUA umbrella is new, the firm has provided them on projects for decades.

Recent projects completed by the KUA team include:

Georgia Avenue Redevelopment

In a project that leveraged all of KUA’s skills and expertise, the firm was hired to lead the masterplanning and renovation effort to stitch together and activate numerous underutilized parcels in the Summerhill neighborhood of Atlanta, maximizing shared outdoor space and minimizing vehicle parking to create a vibrant, walkable destination.

Troup-LaGrange Zoning Repair

When the City of LaGrange, Georgia, and Troup County decided to create a new Unified Development Ordinance, KUA was brought in as a team member to help strategically craft zoning strategy and policy. The UDO will remove barriers to inclusive, incremental growth and guide positive development, modeled on successful historic patterns, for decades to come.

La France Walk

Self-developed by KUA and informed by 15 years of research and market observation, La France Walk was designed with the core principles of walkability, inclusivity and resilience. Single-family homes are intermixed with duplexes and attached accessory dwelling units (ADUs) to provide a range of housing choices and price points, and the nearby MARTA station enables residents to minimize or eliminate their dependence on a personal automobile.

Grace Midtown Church Sanctuary

Tasked with transforming an aging warehouse into a flexible sanctuary and event space for a local church, KUA created a design that raised the roof on new custom steel trusses, creating a dramatic, light-filled interior space with numerous overhead garage doors that create a seamless transition to the new outdoor courtyard. Located directly on a future Atlanta BeltLine spur trail, the project gives the church an unmatched front door to the rest of the city and the opportunity to minimize dependence on personal automobiles.

“We want to make the world a better place, one neighborhood at a time,” says Kronberg.
