A new study by the home warranty experts Cinch Home Services has revealed that Colorado residents show the highest interest in home improvement and renovation projects nationwide.
The research analyzed Google search data across all 50 states to determine which areas demonstrate the highest interest in searches for home renovations per capita. The study included 523 key search terms that range from things such as “kitchen contractor,” “en-suite renovation cost” and “bathroom inspiration”.
With 2,471 searches per 100,000 residents, Colorado takes the top spot. The searches revealed that the top five spaces residents want to renovate are the bathroom, kitchen, porch, bedroom and then living room.
Oregon came in second with 2,335 searches per 100,000 residents. The most common contractor searches in the state include plumber, locksmith, electrician, roofing contractor, and general contractor.
Washington ranked third with 2,251 searches per 100,000 residents.
Florida ranked fourth with 2,239 searches per 100,000 residents, making it the highest-ranking state outside the western region.
Virginia completed the top five with 2,139 searches per 100,000 residents.

South Dakota ranked last with 1,175.33 searches per 100,000 residents, less than half the search volume of top-ranked Colorado. Montana and North Dakota ranked just above, showing similar search patterns.
The study also looked at which rooms Americans are most interested in renovating. Bathrooms took the top spot, with an average of 381,531 searches each month, followed by kitchens with 257,236 searches, and porches at 152,516 searches.
Living rooms and bedrooms rounded out the top five, with 79,590 and 77,483 searches, respectively, for renovation or improvement ideas.
When it comes to contractors, plumbers topped the list with over 1.5 million monthly searches nationwide. Locksmiths came in second with 1.3 million searches, and electricians followed closely with 843,004 searches.
A spokesperson from Cinch Home Services commented on the findings,
“The findings from this study are super interesting and tie in with wider findings. For example, according to Forbes, Washington ranks 1st in the nation for disposable income, at around $30,000, and Colorado ranks 6th at around $26,000. Hawaii, which came bottom in this study, also came bottom in the Forbes ranking, with a disposable income of $9,551. The findings seem to indicate that if people have spare cash, they will spend it easily, which directly contributes to their quality of life.
“Regional variations in home improvement interest can be influenced by factors such as climate, the age of housing stock, and local economic conditions. For example, states with more extreme weather may see increased searches for contractors or specific rooms focused on weather damage repair or prevention.”
